Dark Tales

January 18, 2024 — 7:30 pm

Dark Tales is an immersive musical and visual experience inspired by the Newfoundland ghost stories, folklore, and childhood memories in Tom Dawe’s book An Old Man’s Winter Night, illustrated by Veselina Tomova.

Dark Tales brings together original music by the acclaimed Canadian composer Alice Ping Yee Ho and riveting visuals by animator Duncan Major. It will be performed by Duo Concertante, violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves

Seated on the stage with the performers and surrounded by projected animations, audiences will experience a magical audiovisual world of phantoms, fairies, fetches, and folklore. Inside this unique sensory environment, Dark Tales explores the mysteries of the supernatural, as well as our collective struggles with desire, love, grief, and regret, engaging the imagination in a whole new way of storytelling.

The performance consists of five movements, each ten minutes long, with pauses at times. Please be advised that the projected animations occasionally include flashing lights, which may affect individuals with photosensitive conditions. All ages are welcome, however, the experience may best be enjoyed by audience members aged 10+. This unique performance will take place on the stage of the Arts and Culture Centre, therefore seating is limited, and advance booking is recommended. Seating is general, and we ask that people arrive early to select their seats.

We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for this project.
