SUMMARY:Opening Night: Duo Concertante - At Water’s Edge WORLD PREMIERE
DESCRIPTION:In the late-1980’s\, Robert Mellin was a young architect researching the construction of houses\, wharves and sheds in Tilting\, Fogo Island\, NL. The drawings\, photos and interviews he compiled into an acclaimed book are now re-imagined by Duncan Major and Melissa Hui in Tilting: At Water’s Edge as an audiovisual journey featuring original music\, animation\, and stories told by Tilting’s own residents. \nDuo Concertante brings this world premiere to life alongside other works inspired by homelands: de Falla’s Suite populaire espagnole\, Janáček’s Sonata for violin and piano\, and Stravinsky’s Danse Russe. \nA post concert chat will be held following the performance

SUMMARY:Brentano String Quartet in Concert
DESCRIPTION:With a career spanning over three decades\, the Brentano Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism; and the Times (London) hails their “wonderful\, selfless music-making.” Known for its unique sensibility\, probing interpretive style\, and original programming\, the Quartet has performed across five continents in the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals\, thus establishing itself as one of the world’s preeminent ensembles. \nFormed in 1992\, The Brentano Quartet has received numerous accolades\, including\, in 1995\, the prestigious Naumburg and Cleveland Quartet Awards. They have been privileged to collaborate with such artists as soprano Jessye Norman and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato\, as well as pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss. The Quartet’s notable recordings include Beethoven’s Quartet\, Op. 131 (Aeon) which was featured in the 2012 film “A Late Quartet\,” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken\, and a 2017 live album with Joyce DiDonato\, “Into the Fire—Live from Wigmore Hall” (Warner.) Their most recent release features the K. 428 and K. 465 (“Dissonance”) Quartets of Mozart for the Azica label. \nDedicated and highly sought after as educators\, the Quartet has served as Artists-in-Residence at the Yale School of Music for the past decade. They also lead the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and appear regularly at the Taos School of Music. Previously\, the Quartet served for fifteen years as Ensemble-in-Residence at Princeton University. \nThe Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano\, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved\,” the intended recipient of his famous love confession.

SUMMARY:Tom Allen: Brahms in New York
DESCRIPTION:Which childhood moments determine the adults we become? At age 9\, composer Johannes Brahms was not yet the living successor to Mozart and Beethoven. He was just a very creative child whose parents very nearly sent him to America for a touring life of carnivals and minstrel shows. Who would this American Brahms have become\, and what would the world\, and the other Brahms have thought of him? With glorious music from a tremendous cast of players\, Tom Allen brings us to 1880s Vienna for a chance meeting between the life that was\, and the life that could have been. \nBorn in Montreal\, Tom Allen is a passionate music lover\, storyteller\, accomplished trombonist\, writer and CBC broadcaster. He written three books\, been a Resident Artist with Soulpepper Theatre\, delivered storytelling workshops at various University music programs and at the Banff Centre\, been named an honourary Doctor of Letters by Thompson Rivers University\, and hosted countless concerts across the country. He has also written a series of cabaret storytelling shows\, entitled Chamber Musicals\, including From Weimar to Vaudeville\, The Missing Pages\, A Poe Cabaret\, Being Lost and JS Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow. Brahms in New York is the latest in this series. \nFeaturing narrator Tom Allen with Deantha Edmunds\, soprano\, Heather Kao\, violin\, Lori Gemmell\, harp\, Bill Brennan\, piano\, and Jim Vivian\, bass. \nThis show is included in the Festival Pass.
