SUMMARY:Opening Night: Pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin
DESCRIPTION:One of the most important pianists of his generation\, pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin was the silver medalist and winner of the Krystian Zimerman Prize at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition. Recipient of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec and of the prestigious Career Development Award conferred by the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto\, he was awarded the Prix Denise-Pelletier in November 2022\, becoming the youngest recipient in the history of the Prix du Québec. As a soloist\, he has performed with every major Canadian symphony orchestra as well as the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra\, Sinfonia Varsovia\, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra\, Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, Korean Symphony Orchestra\, OFUNAM (Mexico)\, Les Violons du Roy and I Musici de Montréal. Charles Richard-Hamelin has recorded eleven albums on the Analekta label. Five of these are dedicated primarily to the solo piano works of Frédéric Chopin; there are also four recordings with Andrew Wan\, concertmaster of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. He has also recorded both Chopin piano concertos with the OSM and Mozart’s Piano Concertos nos. 22 and 24 with Les Violons du Roy. SUMMARY:Dark Tales
DESCRIPTION:Dark Tales is an immersive musical and visual experience inspired by the Newfoundland ghost stories\, folklore\, and childhood memories in Tom Dawe’s book An Old Man’s Winter Night\, illustrated by Veselina Tomova. \nDark Tales brings together original music by the acclaimed Canadian composer Alice Ping Yee Ho and riveting visuals by animator Duncan Major. It will be performed by Duo Concertante\, violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves \nSeated on the stage with the performers and surrounded by projected animations\, audiences will experience a magical audiovisual world of phantoms\, fairies\, fetches\, and folklore. Inside this unique sensory environment\, Dark Tales explores the mysteries of the supernatural\, as well as our collective struggles with desire\, love\, grief\, and regret\, engaging the imagination in a whole new way of storytelling.  \n  \nThe performance consists of five movements\, each ten minutes long\, with pauses at times. Please be advised that the projected animations occasionally include flashing lights\, which may affect individuals with photosensitive conditions. All ages are welcome\, however\, the experience may best be enjoyed by audience members aged 10+. This unique performance will take place on the stage of the Arts and Culture Centre\, therefore seating is limited\, and advance booking is recommended. Seating is general\, and we ask that people arrive early to select their seats. \n  \nWe acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for this project. \ncanadacouncil.ca
