Testimonial for Tuckamore’s Young Composers Program, 2017
My experience at Tuckamore was both fun and challenging. It was a very valuable week which pushed me in new directions as a composer.

This year’s Young Composers Program at the Tuckamore Chamber Music Festival was invaluable to me as a young composer. As a participant, I had the opportunity to work with the Festival’s very talented Young Artists, bringing my new piece to life while composing another a new work throughout the week. This was sightread by the incredible Duo Concertante, and all of the performed works during the program were professionally recorded. The composition workshops and lessons were extremely engaging, varying from discussing and practising compositional techniques, score studying, presenting new music written throughout the week, and learning about the professional music world. Dr. Andrew Staniland’s wealth of knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm for composition is truly inspiring, and he creates a positive environment to express yourself, both in discussion and composition. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenging composition assignments, which presented different methods of working, helping to push the boundaries of my compositional voice. This program helps build composition and analysis chops, relationships with emerging performers and composers, public speaking skills, and time management. Having participated in this program twice, I highly recommend it to any young composer searching for in depth learning, invaluable connections, and highly prepared performances of their music.
